How to Test Your Microphone

Check your microphone in seconds with these simple steps. No software, no signup required.

01

Click "Start Mic"

Press the Start Mic button. Allow microphone access when your browser prompts you. The live waveform visualizer will activate immediately, showing your audio input in real-time.

02

Speak & Check Levels

Speak into your microphone and watch the volume meter respond. The green zone is ideal; yellow means loud; red indicates clipping. Adjust your mic position or gain slider for optimal levels.

03

Record & Playback

Click Record to capture an audio clip. When done, click Stop Recording. Your recording will appear in the Recordings section below — play it back to hear how your microphone sounds.

Features

Advanced Microphone Testing

Professional audio analysis tools running entirely in your browser. No data leaves your device.

Live Waveform Visualizer

See a real-time animated waveform, frequency bar chart, or radial burst visualization of your microphone's audio input using the Web Audio API.

dB Volume Meter

Monitor your microphone's volume level in decibels (dB) with a color-coded meter showing real-time levels and peak hold readings.

Record & Download

Record unlimited audio clips directly in the browser and play them back immediately. Download recordings as WebM audio files for further analysis.

Frequency Spectrum

View a frequency band breakdown showing bass, low-mid, mid, upper-mid, presence, and treble response levels of your microphone in real-time.

Audio Processing Controls

Toggle echo cancellation, noise suppression, and auto gain control to test how each setting affects your microphone's audio quality independently.

100% Private

All audio processing uses the Web Audio API locally. Nothing is recorded or transmitted to any server. Your microphone audio stays entirely on your device.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about testing your microphone online.

Why is my microphone not working?

The most common cause is a blocked permission. Look for the microphone icon in your browser's address bar and click it to allow access. On desktop, also check your OS settings: Windows › Privacy › Microphone, or Mac › System Preferences › Security & Privacy › Microphone. Make sure no other app (Zoom, Discord, Teams) has exclusive control of your microphone. If you're using a USB or Bluetooth microphone, try switching to it using the device selector dropdown.

What does the waveform display show?

The waveform (oscilloscope view) shows the raw amplitude of the audio signal over time. A flat line means no sound is detected. Larger waves mean louder audio. In Frequency Bars mode, the visualization shows how much energy is present at different frequencies — useful for spotting unwanted hum, buzz, or high-frequency noise from poor cables or interference.

What is a good microphone volume level?

For voice calls and recordings, aim to have your voice peaking in the green-to-yellow zone (roughly -12 dB to -6 dB). Consistently hitting the red zone means your mic is too loud and audio will distort or "clip". If your levels look too low, move closer to the mic, increase your OS input gain, or use the Gain slider in the settings panel to boost the signal.

What is echo cancellation and should I enable it?

Echo cancellation is a browser-level audio processing feature that removes feedback from your speakers being picked up by your microphone during calls. It's beneficial for video calls but can reduce audio quality for music recording or podcasting. For music use, disable it along with noise suppression to capture the raw audio signal. For calls, leave it enabled for cleaner communication.

Can I test multiple microphones?

Yes! If you have multiple microphones connected (built-in, USB, Bluetooth, or via headset), all available devices will appear in the Microphone Device dropdown after you grant permission. Simply select a different microphone and click Start Mic again to switch. This makes it easy to compare your built-in mic with an external one.

Does this tool work on mobile phones?

Yes! The Mic Check tool works on all modern smartphones. On iOS, use Safari for the best experience (Chrome on iOS has limited microphone API support due to Apple's WebKit restrictions). On Android, Chrome works perfectly. The waveform visualizer adapts to mobile screen sizes automatically.
